Striking and highly sculptural, this brooch features a skeletonized dial centered with an 1867 one-peso coin. The coin-edged case is surmounted by an imperial crown, flanked by griffins, a sword, and a scepter. At the same time, the reverse displays an intricate Aztec calendar motif, hallmarks of Flato’s bold, narrative-driven design.
Paul Flato, often called the “Jeweler to the Stars,” rose to prominence in 1930s–40s Hollywood, creating extravagant, witty pieces for celebrities such as Greta Garbo and Joan Crawford. He employed notable designers, including David Webb and Count Verdura, and was reportedly Harry Winston’s largest client during Winston’s early years as a wholesale dealer. Known for theatricality, historical references, and a playful sense of storytelling, Flato also drew inspiration from his time in Mexico, incorporating coins, pre-Columbian imagery, and folkloric elements clearly reflected in this dramatic Imperio design.
