After a brief period as a salesman in Bulgari's New York store, Joel Arthur Rosenthal departed to Paris in 1977 to start his career as a jewelry designer. He began by creating pieces using affordable materials such as coral, moonstone, and small colored diamonds. His rapid success led to the opening of his discreet salon at 7 Place Vendôme, where he continues to serve his loyal clients.
His company, JAR, does not have a shop window or a street sign. Entry is granted only through the sponsorship of a known customer and for individuals whose names do not raise any ambiguity. Each piece of jewelry is unique and designed specifically for an individual client, with an annual output of 70 to 80 pieces.
Rosenthal draws inspiration from nature, incorporating elements of flora and fauna into his designs. He combines references from the past with contemporary jewelry techniques. Since 1977, he has been setting gems in pave arrangements that are as fine as needlepoint stitches, often enhancing the colors of the stones by mounting them in a blackened alloy.
