NARDI Love Conquers All Cameo Brooch
NARDI Love Conquers All Cameo Brooch
An Italian two-toned cameo brooch by Nardi featuring a gold scalloped halo, finished with meticulously-spaced round diamonds that frame the outer edge. Although this cameo dates from the 1980s, it is a nod to Victorian brooches which often paid homage to classical mythology. One of the oldest themes seen in this medium are of love and romance, often represented by Cupid, the god of desire and erotic love. This Nardi cameo depicts a Hellenistic baby Cupid with arrow in hand as he triumphantly struts next to a subdued lion. Together, they are the allegory of "Amor Vincit Omnia", or "Love Conquers All", arguably a declaration coined by the Roman poet Virgil and one that has been ubiquitous throughout the centuries.
16 diamonds weighing approx. 0.80 carats total. Measures approx. 1.50" in length, 1.75" in width, 0.20" height off the pin. Colors of cameo are more subdued than seen in the photos, with a carnelian-colored background fading into an ombré of matte white bas relief.
Made in Italy. Includes "750" hallmark, Signed "Nardi"; circa 1980s.
