VAN CLEEF & ARPELS Tubogas Passe-Partout Constellation Necklace in 18k Yellow Gold.

A notable necklace by Van Cleef & Arpels dating from the early years of the iconic Passe-Partout collection. This piece features a tubogas chain with a hidden clasp that doubles as a pendant, which is also tubular in form. Embellishments of round brilliant diamonds are slightly raised from the surface of the gold pipette and surrounded by a constellation of twelve stellar engravings, resembling the zodiac spectrum.

The innovative aestheticism of the Passe-Partout combined with its pioneering techniques set the stage for many other fine jewelers at the time. Originally presented at the World's Fair in 1939 as a multi-purpose item of jewelry for the modern woman, the serpentine chain was intended to be paired with other jewels in the collection. That said, this particular necklace offers the same kind of convertibility, with its clever pendant worn as is - or combined with others in the series to transform the look altogether. Typically the style was complete with Van Cleef & Arpels posy clips or those from the Hawaii florals. In addition, this distinctive design is said to have been created in collaboration with Péry et Fils, whose successful creative partnerships with the Maison include the “Zip” necklace and the “Bagatelle” series.

Diamond weight approx. 1.50 carats total. Adjustable inner circumference, ranging from approx. 13" to 15". Width of tubogas chain measures approx. 0.35" and height ranging from 0.20" to 0.35" off the neck. Tension clasp with foldover safety. Gross weight approx. 74 grams.
